M Haroon has been engaged in the national and international political and public spheres since studentship days. In Sudan M Haroon was a member of the National Congress Party (NCP). In 2013 he left the NCP and founded, with others, the National Movement for Change (NMC). M Haroon is an advocate of democratization, openness, transparency, human rights and good governance.
Contributing to national political and policy debate M Haroon is a founding member of Khartoum University’s Forum for National Debate and Policy Making.
As a member of board and a director of the Khartoum-based, non-governmental think tank, Future Trends Foundation (2006-2010), M Haroon initiated and contributed to various debates, research projects and campaigns in areas of democratization, political reform and other policy-related initiatives. He coached the pioneering First Times Voters project where over 2000 young Sudanese university students, males and females, had civic and voter education training. He also organized the first Sudanese Urban and Election Violence conference (2010), and subsequently chaired a national task force for authoring the first National Anti-Violence Strategy (2010).
As a civil society activist M Haroon is also active in the world of civil society organizations. He founded and is he chairperson of the board of trustees of, Eid El Nil for Local Development, a national NGO working closely with local communities in the Western Sudanese region of Kordofan in areas of education, primary health care, provision of clean drinking water and socio-economic empowerment.
