Professional specialized committees:

1. Member of the committee assigned the task of investigating the possibility of treated sewage water utilization. Letter No. 965/60 on 28 Shaaban 1414H (1994/95) from director of the Department of Water and Sanitary Drainage Authority, Al-Gassim Region, to the Dean of College. The committee investigated the possibility of utilizing the accumulating treated sewage water for forestration and landscaping east of Buraydah City. The report included the advantages and disadvantages of utilization of sewage water.

2. Member of the committee assigned the responsibility of investigating the hazards and dangers of offensive odours in the City of Buraydah, Al-Gassim. This committee was formulated on the request of Al-Gassim Emirates: letter No. 22/3022 on the 8th day of shawwal 1414H (8/10/1414H) (1994/95). The report forwarded included causes, effects and remedy.

3. Member of the committee chosen to assess the current facilities and performance of the existing water analyses laboratories managed by the Water and Sanitary Drainage Authority, Water purification and treatment stations and municipalities in Al-Gassim. This committee was formulated on the request of Al-Gassim Emirate: Letter No. 22/13243 on 28th day of Jamad Awal 1415 H (28/5/14l5H) (1995/96).

4. Member of the committee assigned the responsibility of discussing the environmental considerations at all stages and levels of developmental planning: Letter No. 73/9 on the 8th day of Safar1415H (8/2/1415H) (1995/96) from his highness Al-Gassim Prince (President of Region Council).

5. Member of the old College building evacuation committee (Transfer to Al-Melida Campus).

6. Permanent member of the committee assigned the task of preparation and correction of examinations to recruit Saudi technical staff in the Dept.

7. Member and secretary of the steering Committee of the International Conference on datepalm and related activities: scheduled 6-9 April 2003( 4-7 Safar 1424 H) at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, King Saud University Branch, Al-Gassim .

8. Consultant and cooperator with the UNESCO Chair in Water ( UCW ) Khartoum – Sudan : water resources and quality ( in charge of water quality laboratory since April 2005 .

1. Team member and a leading soil microbiologist in the following research projects:

a. A demonstration project for increasing legume protein through biological nitrogen fixaton in Sudan (a project financed by the Arab Gulf Programme for the United Nations (AGFUND) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNEP).

b. Khartoum/Hamburg (Germany) Universities Project: Crop growth and development in salt-affected soils (Dept. of Biochem. & Soil Science, Khart. Univ.).

c. Arab Centre for Studies of Arid and Drylands (ACSAD) Project: Reclamation and utilization of salt-affected soils soils (Dept. of Biochem. & Soil Science, Khart. Univ.).

d. Team and committee member of the specially constituted multi-disciplinary committee that was assigned the responsibility of formulating preliminary research plans for the development of water resources and management programmes: an externally financed project executed at the Institute of Environmental Studies, University of Khartoum.

15. Research Projects evaluation (Assessment):

Selected by the Project Management Department of King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology to evaluate three projects submitted to the City for funding .

16. Technical studies and consultations:

1. Feasibility study of the expansion of rainfed cotton in Sudan. Annex No. 1 (soils). Vol. II. A study financed by the World Bank and prepared by the Sudanese consultation Bureau. Khartoum. P.O. Box 1887 (1982).

2. Represented the college in at least three committees to suggest solutions for specific environmental pollution problems as per the request of the emirate of El-Gassim Region of Saudi Arabia.

3. Detailed study of the soils of the southern center-pivot of the Experimental Farm of the College of Agric. & Vet. Med. El Gassim, Buraydah. Saudi Arabia.

4. Detailed study of the soils and irrigation water of the Northern Center-pivot of the Experimental Farm of the college of Agric. & Vet. Med. El-Gassim, Buraydah, Saudi Arabia.

5. Detailed study of the soils adjacent to the Nothern center pivot of the Experimental Farm of the College of Agric. & Vet. Med., El-Gassim, Buraydah. Saudi Arabia.

6. Study on the utilization of wastes as organic fertilizers prepared as per the request of the Saudi Arabian Standards Oganization.

7. Member of a 2 – man committee assigned the task of studying and reporting on the status and degree of efficiency of effluent treatment pertaining to the Sewage Treatment Plant in AL-Ras Governorate, Saudi Arabia 1421 H (2001- 2002 G).

8. Revised and reported on the legislative laws controlling the utilization of treated sewage water in Saudi Arabia as suggested by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs according to the Council of Ministers’ Decree No. 42 on 11/2/1421 (2001-2002 G).

9. Member of a 5 – man committee assigned the task of studying and reporting on the possibility and the feasibility of draining treated sewage effluent produced in AL-Gassim Sewage Treatment Plants to Wadi AL-Rumma (Saudi Arabia) to accord with the legislations mentioned in ‘8’ above.

10. Team-Leader for the study on the “Challenges of Water Resources in Sudan ” – ( Nile Basin Initiative , Socio-Economic Development & Benefit Sharing Project ), under the patronage of the Development Studies & Research Institute , University of Khartoum , (2007) .

Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO):

1- Member of the committee assigned the task of formulating the guidelines for Drinking Water, (2005-2006).

2- Currently, member of the committee assigned the task of preparing the Sudanese guidelines for Organic Farming according to the international standards (2008).

Saudi Arabian Standards Organization:

The applicant revised thirteen (13) Saudi Arabian Standards. Nine of which dealt with microbiological standards and methodology, plus four other standards on table salt, pollution indicating materials, composted waste materials and compound chemical fertilizers. The recommendations and reports written included amendment of terminology, updating of methodology, spelling and language mistakes, suggestions…. etc.

These Standards are:

1. Standard No. 1306: General guide for Microbiological Examination.

2. Revision of the Saudi Standard No. 1390: Microbial limits in food: Part 1.

3. Saudi standard No. 1236: Microbiological Methods for the examination of food: Part 5: Estimation of Clostridium perfringens and detection of: Clostridium botulinum.

4. Saudi Standard No. 1239: Microbiological methods for the examination of food: Part 4; Yeasts – fungi (Molds).

5. Gulf standard No. 5034 (prepared by Saudi Arabia): Methods for Microbiological examination of meat, fish, shell-fish and their products.

6. Gulf standard No. 1253 (prepared by Saudi Arabia): Bottled drinking

Water.

7. Gulf standard No. 2253 (prepared by Saudi Arabia): Unbottled drinking water.

8. Saudi standard No. 1081: Methods for examining table salt.

18. Contribution to community and Public:

1. General supervision of community services laboratory in the Dept. This laboratory performs analyses, with written reports, of soils, water, plants and fertilizer and manure samples for farmers, governmental and private sector departments (1415 H – 1994/95 to 2004).

2. Preparation of reports on bacteriological and biochemical analyses of water which include:

a. Total bacterial count.

b. Total coliform and faecal coliform counts.

c. Biochemical analyses (e.g. NH4+ , NO2- and NO3-, BOD, COD… etc)

d. Other observations included presence of algal blooms, eutrophication, odour and smell, turbidity … etc.

1. Report on the bacteriological analyses of drinking water: Daria town, El-Gassim, Saudi Arabia.

2. Report on the bacteriological analyses of surface drainage water in Al-Ras town, Al-Gassim. Saudi Arabia. (In Arabic).

4. Report on the chemical and biological analyses of drinking water samples from students dormitories: College of Agric. & Vet. Med., Al-Gassim, Saudi Arabia.

5. Report on the bacteriological and biochemical analyses of drinking water samples: Prisons Dept., Al-Gassim. Saudi Arabia, (In Arabic).

6. Report on the bacteriological and biochemical analyses of drinking water: Vocational Training Centre, Buraydah, Saudi Arabia. (In Arabic).

7. Preparation of written reports and recommendations regarding the suitability of water samples from a few domestic drinking water wells (well No. l and well No. 2 as delineated and supplied to us) for drinking purposes. (In Arabic).

8. Report on the measurement of turbidity status of 19 unbottled drinking water samples to determine their suitability for human consumption (In Arabic).

9. Report on the analyses of water of a private well, on the premises of Onizah – Buraydah highway, belonging to one of the farmers in the region to determine its suitability for fish rearing and production. (In Arabic).

10. Preparation of a report on the suitability of irrigation water supplied by contractor Zayd El-Hussein for irrigating trees and ornamentals planted on the frings of Al-Gassim highways. (Al-Gassim highway authority request to the Dean)) (In Arabic).

11. Preparation of a report on the means and ways of treating the unusual appearance of a red colored soil in the water from wells belonging to Al-Gassim Industrial City, which affected the performance of pumps as well as the water distribution network of the City (General director of the Industrial City request to the College Dean) (In Arabic).

12. Preparation of a report on the wilting symptoms that appeared on the trees grown in King Khalid Modern centre (Buraydah Municipality request to the College Dean) (In Arabic).

13. Participated in writing a report reflecting the performance of alfalfa grown in the College Experimental farm at Al-Melida, Al-Gassim. This is according to a request from Vice Dean. (In Arabic).

14. Report on the factors affecting the suitability of water in Al-Gassim Region, for drinking and its conformity to the Internationally acceptable limits. (In Arabic).

19. Interaction and Communication with the International Academic and Scientific Research communities

1. Interaction and Communication with the University of Hawaii NifTAL* Project Scientists: P.O. Box ‘0’ Paia Hawaii, 96779 USA. (*NifTAL is an acronym for Nitrogen fixation in Tropical Agricultural legumes).

2. Interaction and Communication with the Soil Microbiology Laboratory Authorities (Scientists) of the Agric. Res. Centre, El Giza, Egypt.

3. Visited and trained in the Soil Microbiology laboratory of the International Atomic Energy, Seibersdorf (Near Vienna), Austria.

Communication with these laboratories facilitated the exchange of current information which we are in a crucial need for in this part of the world. Moreover, through these communications I have contributed to the international reputation and recognition of our University: For example the Network coordinator of NifTAL Project in USA made a visit to our laboratory at the Faculty of Agric. during 1984/85 and I was awarded a small grants to promote research work in the field of Legume-Rhizobium relationship.
