NORTH BIRMINGHAM

October 1995 – May 1996

I joined North Birmingham Community Health Trust as a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist. This commitment was supervised by Professor Shashidharan, Medical Director and I was able to lead very active community clinical team which covered an area which was later divided between two Consultants due to the large number of patient morbidity involved in that area.

Besides the regular clinical commitment in the form of ward rounds, out-patient clinics, staff support and supervision, I had undertaken the following commitments:

Weekly Consultants Clinical meetings supervised by Professor Shashidharan, for regular monitoring of the bed situation and received regular support from Professor Shashidharan and senior colleagues.

I was also involved in not less than six Medico-legal reports, some of which were supervised by Professor Shashidharan.

I also participated in the regular case conferences, audit meetings and other staff-management meetings.

July 1995 – October 1995

I worked as a Senior Clinical Medical Officer in a Psycho-geriatric Unit at Solihull Hospital in Birmingham, attached to Dr Grewel’s Unit.

Participated in regular case conferences, audit and clinical meetings.

February 1995 – July 1995

I worked with Dr M George, Queen Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital as a Registrar in General Adult Psychiatry. The Unit also had special responsibility of covering the Intensive Care Unit.

August 1994 – January 1995

I worked with Dr Pearson, Psychotherapy Unit, Uffculme Clinic as a Registrar and had the opportunity to do both individual and group dynamic psychotherapy.

February to July 1994

I worked with Dr Mahadeshwar, Consultant in Learning Disability Service, St Margaret’s Hospital, Great Barr, Birmingham.

August 1993 – January 1994

I worked as Registrar with Professor Brockington in the Mother and Baby Unit, Queen Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital,B/ham.

February to July 1993

I worked as Registrar with Dr Sheik, Consultant Psychiatrist at Hollymoor Hospital covering General Adult Psychiatric Services.

August 1992 – January 1993

I worked as Registrar with Dr Rauchenberg, Consultant Psychiatrist at Highcroft Hospital, Birmingham, in Adult Psychiatric Services

February to July 1992

I worked as Registrar with Dr Telfer, Consultant Psychiatrist at All Saints Hospital, Birmingham, covering the Drug Addiction Service.

August 1991 to January 1992

I worked as Registrar at Hollymoor Hospital with Dr Clark, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Regional Adolescent Unit.

February 1991 to July 1991

Registrar in old age psychiatry with Dr Gaspar,at Holymoor Hospital Birmingham.

August 1990 to January 1991

I joined the Birmingham Psychiatric Training Scheme on 1 September 1990 as Senior House Officer and then promoted to a Registrar whilst I was working with Dr M Davies, Consultant Psychiatrist in General Psychiatry until 31 January 1991 at the Midland Nerve Hospital, Birmingham.

August 1988 to July 1990 Registrar

I worked with Professor Bashir in the Department of Psychiatry at the Khartoum Teaching Hospital for 2 years.

May 1987 – June 1988 Registrar

Department of Endocrinology at Khartoum Teaching Hospital for one year.

April 1986 to March 1987 SHO

Internship period at Khartoum Teaching Hospital.

September 1979 to November 1985

Student at the university of Khartoum, faculty of medicine.

Research and publications:-

–  I took part in the following papers either as principal investigator, co-author or active participant:

–  Tardive dystonia British Bullutin sep. 1992 it’s a case report of permanent facial and neck dystonic symptoms ,as side effect of Haloperidol medication

that showed poor response to conventional treatment including Botulinium A toxins, for over 18 month.

–   Reliability study of multilingual questionnaire for mothers with postnatal psychiatric conditions, professor brockington August 1995.

In this study, the research team under the leadership of professor Brockington was able to show that The postnatal psychiatric questionnaire designed by the main author is able to stand high rating in its inter-rater reliability test “over 79%” and high validity for the diagnostics groups “80%”.

–         Balance 1 study generated many international reports coordinated by the Oxford Group. It’s a multi centre controlled clinical trial study of the prophylactic study of the effectiveness of lithium carbonate , sodium valproate, versus the combination of the above drugs in Bipolar mood disorders.

–         My role in this study was center coordinator and lead investigator at Dudlley town in the West Midlands region U.K. This study is thought to be the biggest study in this field which is concluded late 2006. Its is also followed by Balance II comparing lithium against , SSRIS , and the combination of SSRIS, with lamotrigine in controlling the depressive symptoms in Bipolar patients.

Participation in international conferences and specialized clinical courses:-

  1. I participated in the royal college ECT course launched Oct 1994 at York city for the lead managers of ECTs in therapeutic centers. I presented and audit of ECT at Queen Elizabeth hospital Birmingham U.K 1994.
  2. Cultural and political influence by psychiatric leaders, in Manchester U.K, April 1991. I addressed media and parliamentary influence in this conference.
  3. Royal college annual conferences in years 1992, 1994, 1999, in the latter we reported our reliability study for the postnatal psychiatric conditions.
  4. I was a lead organizer for the Islamic medical association first national conference in Khartoum 1990, and presented the association media address.
  5. I Participated in the American psychiatric association conference in New York May 2003, reported earlier findings of Balance I study in mood disorder workshops.
  6. I was a presenter of peer review assessment and personal development plans in the followings courses: for teaching the teachers and training the trainers : a/ Dudley psychiatric consultant meeting sep 2004, the West Midlands conference Oct 2004, Sheffield consultant meeting 2001, North Trent annual meeting 2001.
  7. Regular participant in the royal college neuropsychiatry meetings and conferences. I presented a paper in innovative development of a novice neuropsychiatry service “the Dudley Model” Oct 2004.
  8. participated in management and leadership role in modifying health service April 2002. Its 3 day conference for psychiatric and health leaders in UK, I was a facilitator of Multidisciplinary groups in psychiatric community teams.
  9. I was organizer and lead participant in the regular annual conferences of “BAPA” British Arab psychiatric association, and executive member in the years 2003, 2004. I presented seminar and lead work-shops dealing with 2nd pant MRCPMsych Exams, and influencing interviews for new consultants.
  10. Neuropsychiatry and Biological psychiatry international conference in Athens Sep 2004. I was participant and a main commentator of the royal college and the NICE recommendations for ECT in UK.
  11. I presented my personal views in psychiatric education in the following conference (i) Hollymoor Hospital group 1993,(ii) Medical education course Dundee Scotland 1997 , and North Trent psychiatric teaching meeting 2001.
  12. Attended the Oxford Research and Statistical Methodology 1 week course April 2004.
  13. Attended over 8 Courses in Mental health Act implementation and changes in years between 1994-2006.
