9.1      Involvement in Strategic Projects:

9.1.1 Projects at Building and Road Research Institute

These are important national strategic projects in which the Institute was deeply involved. The involvement of the Institute resulted in considerable saving of foreign currency to the Country and the acquirement of technical knowledge and self-confidence. I played key role in the following projects:

  • Technical supervisor and manager of BRRI quality control team for Roseiris Dam Heightening Project for the seasons 1994, 1995 and 1996. Duties included supervision of the quality control team working on the earth dam. Active participation in consultancy services related to the project.

  • Member of the supervision team of Merowe Dam Project at BRRI. The team was responsible for supervision of intensive laboratory testing program for the dam during 2000 to 2001.

  • Member of the Supervision Team of the Extension of Suakin Port Project, Sea Ports Cooperation. This is one of the largest projects executed at BRRI and involved off-shore drilling and sampling. The project continued for more than one year 200?

  • Manager and Technical Supervisor of BRRI geotechnical team for Shireik Dam Project, North Sudan. The team carried out intensive geotechnical investigation of the dam site for almost one year for a total Contract Price exceeding 2.0 million USD. Special drilling techniques and field tests were used. BRRI sub-contracted FUGRO firm from UK for the video camera investigations. The Institute was able to acquire new and up to date laboratory and field equipment from the revenue of this service project. Millions of dollars had been saved by the Project (DIU).

  • Supervised and provided consultancy services for hundreds of geotechnical projects (Buildings, Bridges, water harvesting, roads etc..),

9.1.2 Geotechnical Projects (Part of the Important Projects) :

9.1.2.1 Dam Projects

I was actively involved in the major dam projects which have been executed during the last 22 years in Sudan and the Reconnaissance dam project in Ethiopia. These projects are the core geotechnical projects in the country during the mentioned period. They are:

i)                   Merowe Dam Project (2002-2008): I was selected as member of the high technical committee of Merowe dam in 2002. The committee was involved on behalf of the Client in all the technical activities such as: follow-up of the design and construction works, review of monthly progress reports, contribution to the Panel of Experts Meetings (7 meetings) and follow-up of all activities related to the project. I was personally involved in the evaluation of the contract documents of the dam. I spent one month in Germany working on the evaluation and selection of Contractors.

ii)                Roseiris Dam Heightening Project (2007-date): I was first involved in this project in 1993 when the Government decided to work on the dam heightening through local contractors. BRRI was contracted for the geotechnical investigations and quality control of the construction activities. I was the team leader from BRRI part. I was later selected a member of the High Technical Committee of the dam project in 2008 to provide contribution to the geotechnical issues. The committee responsibilities are similar to those of its sister Merowe dam committee. I participated in three Pane of Expert meetings.

iii)              Dam Complex of Upper Atbara: I was selected as Member of the High Technical Committee of the dam project in 2011. The responsibilities are similar to those of its sister Merowe and Roseiris dam committees.

iv)              Great Ethiopian Reconnaissance Dam in Ethiopia: I have been selected member of the special sub-committee initiated in 2014 advice to the ministry of Electricity and Water on the safety of the project. We reviewed number of technical reports, paid a visit to the Site in October 2014 and had several meetings. The work is goin-on
