1989-1994: Fieldwork in the Red Sea Area of Eastern Sudan on the effects of drought on social , cultural and religious organizations among the Hadendawa and other tribes of the region.

1988: Two weeks fieldwork on the socio-economic conditions of the war-displaced living in Khartoum shanty towns. Commissioned by the Economic and Social Research Council, National Council for Research (Sudan).

1987: Two- weeks fieldwork in a project on “oral health”, to determine the socio-economic and cultural factors affecting oral health in the central region of Saudi Arabia.; part of a long -term study carried by the Faculty of Dentistry, King Saud University.

1985: One- month fieldwork in central Saudi Arabia on “Forms of Recreational Activity in Saudi Arabia”. .Areas covered represent nomadic, peasant and urban societies. (Conducted in collaboration with Dr. Ibrahim Khalifa _ from the Dept. of Social Studies, King Saud University).

1984:   Fieldwork research for 20 days in Southern Saudi Arabia (Asir region);part of a two-year project on “The Social Phenomenon of Paying High Dowry in Saudi Arabia” _conducted by the Dept. of Social Studies , King Saud University .

1979/80: Seven months fieldwork in central Sudan among the Badrab (a religious Sufi order) ; as part of the Ph.D. research requirement.

1975: Seven months fieldwork in Northern Central Sudan near Shandi town as part of research requirement for the M.Sc. degree. To determine the socio-economic impact of an agricultural development scheme (9000 acres in size and affecting 13 villages).

1974: Assistant researcher for five weeks to G. Haaland (now Prof. of Anthropology, University of Bergen, Norway)in Darfur, Western Sudan, The object of the study was to document   aspects of nomadism and cultural revivalism among the Fur.

1974: Own research for one month in Abu Hamad area in northern Sudan, studying the sociological dimensions of children games.

1973: Part of a team from the Department of Anthropology to undertake sociological surveys to assist in the settlement of refugees in Southern Sudan.

1972: Field Assistant for one month to R. Lobban (now teaches at   the University of Rhode Island, USA) in the Greater Khartoum. to on dynamics of ethnicity and social networks in urban setting.

1970: Assistant researcher for one month with A. Barnett (author of the Gezira Scheme) in the Gezira Scheme, the largest agricultural scheme in Africa. The social conditions of the scheme’s farmers (tenants) were investigated
