PhD working plan

PhD study plan for 36 months expected time from October 2010 – October 2013

Works Period (Month)
1-       Intensive courses in Plant Taxonomy in the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, University of Khartoum (October, 2010 – November, 2010) and

2-       Extensive Laboratory on the methods of Molecular Biology techniques applied to plant systematic at National Centre for research- Ministry of Science and Technology- Khartoum (December, 2010 – January, 2011).

4 months

(October, 2010 – January, 2011)

3- Literature surveys and revision of the available literature about the identified tropical natural forest species and Molecular techniques (Internet, Scientific publications, books and libraries).

3 months

(February, 2011– April, 2011)

1-       First field trips to the natural forest in four of seven selected states as study areas with 2 months to each, namely Gadarif State (May, 2011-June, 2011), Gezeira State  (July, 2011-August, 2011), Sennar State (September, 2011-Octuber, 2011) and Blue Nile State (November, 2011- December, 2011). The collected field data will include the following:

  • Systematic survey of the different species in each area (correct determination of wood plant species by special species key).
  • Mapping all species in their special geographical areas where possible (GPS).
  • Measuring all tree parameters like height, stem diameter, damages, and plant vigour.

2-       Collection of seed and fresh leaves for the molecular investigation of the natural woody species with unclear taxonomic boundaries.

3-       Ecological measurement (density, abundance and frequency of trees and shrubs).

4-       Laboratory analysis for molecular and anatomical parts.

8         months

(May, 2011 – December, 2011)

1-       Second field trips to the natural forest in the remaining tree States with the same 2 months to each State, namely River Nile State (January, 2012-February, 2012), North Kordofan State  (March, 2012-April, 2012) and South Kordofan State (May, 2012- June, 2012).

6  months

(January, 2012 – June, 2012).

1-       Arrangement of the taxonomic data into Excel sheets (morphological, anatomical and molecular) in two months (July, 2012-August, 2012).

2- Analysis of my research data (by using Computer packages (SPSS, SAS) molecular software (DNA sequencing) in eight months (September, 2012- April, 2013).

1-          – Writing the results and finalization of thesis in fife months (May, 2013- October, 2013).
