CURRENT RESEARCH-2007

A) Sterile Insect Technique (SIT):

I am the academic supervisor of the research projects designed to execute the sterile insect technique for the control of mosquitoes namely Anopheles arabiensis in  northern Sudan. Four candidates are involved in this project (one Ph.D. Candidate and 3 M. Sc. Ones). The project is adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in collaboration with the Sudanese counterpart.

B) Rodents of the Sudan-2007-

This is an ambitious project through which we intend to record the rats and mice of the Sudan and their ecto-and-endo-parasites.

I have already recruited four students to record the rats and mice of greater Khartoum and to survey their ecto-and-endo-parasites with particular emphasis on the Nile or grass rat Arvicanthis niloticus. Very interesting results have been obtained.

C) Cyclops of the Sudan-2007-

No work seems to be done on these important fresh water Crustaceans. They are the sole vectors of the famous disease: Dracunculiasis or Guinea worm. We could interpret that the vector of this disease in Southern Sudan is Metacyclops aspericornis.

We have already secured specimens from Southern Sudan, Dali and Mazmoom and Western Sudan. We intend to record all Cyclops in Sudan.

D) Mosquitoes as Vectors of Diseases-2007-

As mentioned earlier mosquitoes are always targeted as popular pests of research. We have already confirmed that both Culicine and Anopheline Mosquitoes are vectors of Lymphatic Filariasis (Elephantiasis) and that the parasite is Wuchereria bancrofti. Other Programmes include community participation in control and propagation of Malaria. This has already been initiated by the usage of impregnated bed nets at Umdowayna Village-Gezira State.
