Thesis Title: Urban Regeneration and the Transformation of Urban Waterfront; A Case Study of Liverpool Waterfront Regeneration

 

The research aims to explore the process by which the transformation of Liverpool waterfront from a derelict eyesore docklands to spectacular   waterfront destination took place. The research emphasises on the issue of urban design and place making. It employs a qualitative approach in which the researcher examined a significant amount of regeneration related documents, numerous field visits, and conducted a number of focus interviews with key stakeholders.

The study also examined a number of key areas:

  • The impact of economic globalisation, urban competitiveness, place marketing and brandingandchangingurbangovernanceontheprocesswaterfrontregeneration;
  • The role played by urban design, contemporary urban architecture and the idea of place making in shaping the urban environment and mediating between the interest of differentstakeholders;
  • To role of culture and built heritage and how that has influenced the process of urbanregenerationinLiverpoolandshaped thecityurbanidentity.
