Thesis Synopsis:<\/p>\n
Sudan is a multi-racial country with a mixture of Arab-African blood. Sickle cell disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality among indigenous and immigrant ethnic groups in Sudan. However, detection of other hemoglobin variants combining with Hb (S) is not available in routine hematology laboratories. The aim of this study was to detect the presence of these variants combining with hemoglobin “S” in Sudanese sickle cell patients. A group of sickle cell patients were studied using different techniques including: blood counts, sickling test, Hb electrophoresis, Column chromatography, densitometry, ARMS PCR, restriction enzyme Bsu36 and DNA sequencing. Our results confirmed the presence of other Hb variants combining with Hb (S) in 6.1 % of Sudanese sickle cell patients. There is a possible flow of Hb O-Arab and beta thalassaemia genes from the Arab Shiite into the Sudan. Results of Hb F concurs those of African sickle cell haplotypes with lower Hb F levels.<\/p>\n
