United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), Nairobi, Kenya

Aug. – Dec. 2014         National Consultant commissioned by the United Nations HumanSettlements Program (UN-Habitat) to prepare (in coordination with the National Council for Urban Development) Sudan’s Report to Habitat III international conference, 2016.

Feb. – June 2013.        Consultant (with Dr. Bahreldin, I.Z.) for the Sudanese EnvironmentConservation Society for a study entitled “Khartoum 2030: An Alternative, Environmentally-Sensitive Vision for the Development of Greater Khartoum”

 

2011 – 2012   Consultant (with Dr. Eltahir, M.M) for Omdurman Islamic University, to
    assess,   update and develop   the curriculum of   its Department of
    Architecture and Planning.
May – Sept. 2009: Consultant for the World Bank, for a study on the Urban Sector in
    Sudan. Included an in-depth study of the cities of Khartoum, Nyala
    (Darfur) and Juba (South Sudan).
Nov. 08 – Feb. 09: Consultant for   UNDP Syria and   the Syrian Ministry   for Local
    Administration and Environment under the “Technical Assistance in the
    Area of Sustainable Urban Development” Program (SYR/08/002). Major
    role   included designing a   national training program   on Sustainable
    Urban Development.

Mar. – Dec. 2015          Team  Leader   and   Project   Director    of  a   team   of   planners    and engineers commissioned by UN Habitat Sudan (within a cooperation agreement with the Faculty of Architecture, University of Khartoum) to prepare Strategic Urban Development Plans for the towns of Al Roseiris and Al Damazine, Blue Nile State, Sudan.

  • Leader of a team to prepare a design for a commercial, cultural and    recreational    development    on    Omdurman’s    Nile     front.Commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport,Khartoum State.
  • Design of a commercial tower as a waqf for Saad Abuelila Hospital, Khartoum (with Ahmed Abdelraouf).
  • Design of a children’s hospital as an extension to Saad Abuelila Hospital, Khartoum (with Amna Yahia).
  • Coordinator of a team of architects and engineers for three mixed-use towers that are part of Al-Baghdadi Trust in three prominent sites in Khartoum’s C.B.D. (with Ammar Osman, Amal Balila, Abdelmagied Mohamed).
  • Leader   of   a   team  of   planners   and   designers   charged    with preparation   of  a   master   plan   for   the   University  of   Khartoum campuses and estates (2010 – 2030).
  • Leader of a team of planners and architects that prepared a land use plan for the new University of Khartoum Medical Campus at
  • Leader of a team of professionals charged with preparation of updated   designs   and   feasibility   studies   for   five  University   of Khartoum investment projects – including a residential complex inSoba, a mixed-use development in Burri, a family and science park in Soba, a four-star hotel on Khartoum’s river front.
  • Member of a team of professionals charged with preparation of feasibility   studies    for   three    school   complexes   (that    include kindergartens,   primary   and   secondary   schools)   in   Khartoum, Khartoum North and Omdurman.
  • Member of the design team for the Marawi Poultry Farms Project.
  • Co-team leader of the design team for a proposed new Faculty of Medicine Campus at Soba.

Designed and supervised the construction of numerous residential and commercial buildings. For example:

June ’04-June ’08:       Director, Middle East and North Africa Child Protection Initiative (C.P.I.) (www.menacpi.org) , Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A $5 million regionalprogram funded by the World Bank, the Arab Urban Development Institute (A.U.D.I.) and other donors.

Nov.’00 – June ’04:    Urban Planning Specialist, Arab Urban Development Institute(A.U.D.I.), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

  • Initiated, in collaboration with World Bank staff, the inception, establishment and development of the Middle East and North Africa Child Protection Initiative (C.P.I.).
  • Led the establishment of a $440,000 City Development Strategies (CDS) Facility at A.U.D.I., funded by the Cities Alliance, the World Bank, A.U.D.I. and the O.P.E.C. Fund. The Facility provides technical assistance to Arab cities on preparation of urban development plans.
  • Collaborated with World Bank and A.U.D.I. experts in initiating City Development Strategies for the cities of Alexandria, Amman, Sana’a and Al-Madinah Al-Munawara.
  • Coordinated and participated in the scientific committees of five international conferences in Riyadh (2001), Amman (2002), Geona (2004), Dubai (2005), Rabat (2006) related to urban development, children and youth in MENA.
  • Technical committee member of three regional symposia organized by A.U.D.I. and the cities of Homs, Muscat, and Khartoum.
  • Represented A.U.D.I. in the organizational and technical committees of four symposia organized by the Saudi Ministry of Construction and Public Works, the Supreme Commission for Tourism, Riyadh Municipality and Dirraiy’a

 

Mar ’98 – Dec ’99:       Deputy Project Manager then Urban Planner/Housing Specialist United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (UN – Habitat)

(National Professional Personnel), Urban Upgrading and Poverty Alleviation Project, Khartoum, Sudan, (SUD/97/017) – a UNDP-funded Project implemented by the Ministry of Social and Cultural Affairs, Khartoum State.

Jun ’96 –Mar. ’98:       Planner

Member of a planning team commissioned by the Ministry of Engineering Affairs, Khartoum State, led by Dr. Bushra Eltayeb, to assess land uses and to prepare transportation and urban design schemes for the core of Greater Khartoum.

Major assignment: formulation of the planning framework and preparation of land use plans and urban design schemes for the core of Khartoum North.

  • Consultant for Shell Sudan Oil Company.
  • Design and supervision of numerous residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
  • Preparation of structure plans for the towns of Suakin, Sinkat, and (in collaboration with Dar Consult) Singa and Sinnar, Sudan.
  • Preliminary physical and socio-economic studies for the towns of Dalang, Kadugli and Dibaibat, Sudan.
  • Urban design schemes for three prominent sites in Port Sudan;
