Dr. Tallal Saeed graduated from the department of Architecture – Faculty of Architecture & Engineering, University of Khartoum in 2000 with First Class Division and, had, since then joined the teaching staff. He earned his PhD Degree in Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in March 2007 with the thermal performance of building as main specialty. He is an assistant professor at the Department of Architectural Design since August 2008.

 

Dr. Saeed possesses a wide local and international experience. He Had worked for Syska-Hennessy Group (SHG) in Chicago, as a sustainability specialist, in numerous projects in the US, UAE and China. He also worked as a project architect with chicago’s Architectural Services Group (ASG) for three years. Moreover, and for a short period of time 2013-2014, Dr. Tallal collaborated with the Qatari’s Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD) as a sustainability specialist.

 

Dr. Tallal had collaborated with a couple of leading consultancy firms in Sudan before establishing his own office (Sudarch) with branches in Khartoum 2010, Juba 2011, and UAE 2013. He had been professionally trained with Badya, Haydar A. Ali, and Abdalmoniem Mustafa architectural studios, before joining Muratada Maaz office as Studio Manager in 2002. Since 2010, Sudarch studio has been working in numerous residential and institutional projects in both Sudan and South Sudan.

 

Dr. Tallal Saeed has been an executive member of the Sudanese Institute of Architects since 2008, where he served in the Full-Membership and ethics committees, and later in 2011 as the Secretary General of the institute. He has represented the institute in the UIA and AUA congresses, the AUA scientific as well as the constitution committees. Dr. Tallal played a focal role in adopting SIA’s constitution in 2010 and all of its regulations in 2012. He is a member of many professional committees of the Sudanese Engineering Council, where he is working on the pilot project of the Sudanese Professional Examinations for architects. Besides, Dr. Saeed is a member of the technical committee for the Implementation of Khartoum Master Plan 2010, and the technical committee of the National Fund for Students Welfare.

 

Dr. Saeed engages in teaching several design studios, such as; the office building studio (DWG 320), 4th year mixed-use project (DWG 410), and the working drawings (DWG 420). He also teaches several classes on architectural science, building construction, as well as contemporary architectural theory, for the BSc in Architecture Programme. His design studios and classes focus on sustainability, regionalism, and place-making through an integrated architectural approaches. He worked, as well, as the external examiner for the BSc graduation thesis for many local architectural programmes.

 

Dr. Saeed is a founder, and the coordinator, of the MSc in Architecture programme, which was launched in 2013. This programme is the first by-course master programme in Architecture at the university of Khartoum. Under Dr. Tallal’s supervision, a couple of research projects are formulated and realized through several theses. These projects include: regionality in modern Khartoum residential architecture, spatial transformation in residential architecture, impacts and history of local pedagogical approaches to Architecture, converted facilities, and building energy simulation. Dr. Tallal had also supervised a couple of MSc (by-research) dissertations on vernacular modernism, sustainable schools, and the transformation in Khartoum’s apartment buildings.
